Reimagining the Digital Utility at Southeast Utilities Innovation Day

As technology develops and the digital landscape continues to grow and change at a rapid pace, regional "Utilities Days" have become a powerful way for utility companies across the nation to establish a dialogue with each other regarding the state of the industry. This year's Southeast Utilities Innovation Day was held on June 16, 2016 at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, TN,  and participants were encouraged to explore idea of "Reimagining the Digital Utility" through a series of workshops and discussions from various utility companies around the region.

With participants coming together around this unifying theme, the day included a packed agenda. Key sessions included: SAP for Utilities Roadmap: 2016-2017, a panel on Critical Issues of Today, Utegration's Digital Utility Roadmap, discussions around post-implementation models and client feedback, and more.

Spotlight Session:

  • Birmingham Water Works Board: Customer Engagement As the largest water utility in the state of Alabama, Birmingham Water Works Board (BWWB) felt they needed a more cohesive platform of solutions to address customer engagement and user experience. Their planned implementation of SAP CRB including Mobius, a Utegration-developed solution, will allow customers to access their account information, bill and payment history, and meter readings, as well as schedule service requests - all from any computer or mobile device. Utegration is also helping BWWB develop a mobile application that will allow field services personnel to access orders, directions, and other important information via a simple, user-friendly app.
  • Huntsville Utilities: Technology Transformation Huntsville Utilities (HU) is a publicly-owned utility providing water, gas, and electricity, serving over 300,000 customers. As a multi-service utility, HU is focused on updating and transforming its technology landscape, from implementing Google Fiber, employing Smart Meter/Advanced Metering Infrastructure technology, and constructing a new water plant - all at the same time! HU has truly embraced what it means to become a digital utility, with future projects already in the planning stages.

Utegration was honored to host a very productive and rewarding 2016 Southeast Utilities Innovation Day where attendees could discuss issues and best practices, network with their peers, and share their experiences with innovating in our increasingly digital world.

While no one can predict the future of the "digital utility" landscape, there is a clear need to overhaul the old model of the traditional utility to adapt to new market influences including new alternative energy resources, new business processes, new customer service expectations, and more. It's an exciting time for utilities - opportunities abound, and the faster companies seize them and develop new business models around them, the closer we get to a utilities landscape that is smarter, more efficient, and better serves the needs of customers nationwide.
